Google’s Mobile Optimization Update Deadline Looms. Are You Prepared?

You didn’t get the email?  The one saying Google was doing another algorithm update only this time for mobile optimization?

Okay.  Well, now you have the memo.

On April 21st, – which is the same date in 1956 that Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel became a number 1 hit –  Google will be giving:

preferential treatment to websites that are optimized for mobile. 

This is really a big thing.  Ignoring it could create some serious issues with your website – issues that may take some time to recover.

Why is Google forcing Mobile Optimization?

Because it can?

Seriously, Google is doing this because of these facts:

In the USA, 94% of people with smartphones search for local information on their phones.

Interestingly, 77% of mobile searches occur at home or at work, places where desktop computers are likely to be present.

In Google’s eyes, websites that are not mobile-friendly requires the user to pinch or zoom in order to read the content. Users find this a frustrating experience and are likely to abandon the site. Mobile-friendly websites are easily readable and immediately usable.

The truth is you should want your website to be mobile.  If you’ve checked your Google Analytics lately, there is a high percentage of folks currently using mobile to view your website.  Or at least they are trying to.

If they can’t easily view what you want to tell them, they are out of there.  Another missed opportunity for you.

The good news about this mobile optimization update? 

Google has provided a mobile-friendly test so you can see if your website makes the grade.

If Google decides your website doesn’t make the grade, it will give you a list of steps to improve its ranking.

In addition to Google’s tool, there are also a couple of other tools you can use to check out the mobile friendliness of your website.

Hubspot’s Marketing Grader

While you are doing all you can to  go mobile, you’ll want to check out the speed page of your website.  It is rumored that page speed will also be a critical measure.  Check out your website’s page speed for both mobile and desktop.  You can use these free test sites.

Don’t ignore this email. Get cracking.  Get your website up-to-snuff so would –be customers can find you and so you’re not signing the Heartbreak Hotel.
